Ch. 60
This chapter discusses the procedures of periodontal surgery from beginning to end. Before periodontal surgery it is important to complete scaling and root planing to try to restore the health of the tissue. The steps taken after periodontal surgery are also discussed in this chapter. This chapter also discusses how smoking effects the healing of the tissue after surgery so they are advised to quit smoking for a minimum of 3 to 4 weeks after surgery to help promote healing.
Ch. 74
This chapter discusses the different types of patients that would qualify to be good candidates for dental implants such as edentulous patients, and multiple or single tooth patients. It is important to gather assessments prior to implant surgery in order to determine if they would be a good candidate. It is important to determine any contraindications to implant therapy and to examine the bone. It is important for patients to comply with postoperative instructions to promote success of the implants. ES 34
Chp. 60: Periodontal surgery requires the patient be prepared medically, psychologically, and financially for intervention. Surgery is required when after reevaluating the periodontium after phase I therapy there is persistent inflammation and findings do not resolve. Measures during and after surgery are implemented to have the most successful result, as in the use of hemostatic agents and periodontal dressing. Periodontal surgery requires the use of specialized instruments and in some instances where a patient is safest treated in a hospital setting; most can be performed in the dental office safely. Chp. 74: Clinical aspects and evaluation of implants. Implants have been successful in the edentulous and partially edentulous patient and implant design has evolved, greatly improving treatment planning and having a long-term prognosis of success. A patient with adequate dentoalveoloar conditions (alveolar bone height, width, and spatial relationships) and for patients with risk factors that may contribute to implant failure (smoking, systemic disorders) when their conditions are under control and under the care of their medical physician; in partnership with the dentist...can benefit from replacing missing teeth to produce an esthetic, secure, functional, and long-lasting result.

CH 60:
The purpose of this chapter is to discuss periodontal surgery and the importance of the procedures that are involved to have a successful outcome. These procedures include assessing the patient to ensure that they are good candidates for periodontal surgery. Pre-surgical scaling and root planing are also important to improve the health and reduce inflammation and swelling in preparation to surgery. The chapter also discusses smoking and its negative effects on the health of tissues, which can hinder healing after periodontal surgery.
CH 74:
The purpose of chapter 74 is to discuss the importance of the dental assessments done prior to implant surgeries. The importance of doing this is to determine if the patient will be a good candidate for dental implant surgery. It also discusses the contraindications to implant surgery including potential problems that may cause complications to implant surgery such as bone loss. It also discusses the importance of following post-operative instructions to ensure the success of the implant surgery.
Ch. 60. Thi big idea is periodontal surgery. It talks about the preparation of the patient and surgery techniques and the complications that can occur during and after surgery.
Ch. 74. The big idea is implants; the need and type for the patient. It talks about how to determine if the patient is a good canidate for implants based on their assessments. It also talks about the risk factors and contraindications associated with implants and post operative instructions for the patient after treatment such as clinical evaluation, radigraphs, oral hygiene and maintenance.
